TECH TIP

When was the last time you changed your oil?

Most likely you change the oil in your car or truck every 3,000-5,000 miles.  We are constantly reminded by the quick oil change companies that it's a good practice to minimize long term wear on your vehicles engine.

Just like your car or truck, modern machines with hydraulic systems need their oil changed too.  The most obvious use of hydraulics is for tasks such as clamping/unclamping devices, operating valves, cylinders and motors used on machine automation.  Hydraulic oil is also used on many machines for lubrication of very critical drive system components including spindle bearings, hob head gear boxes, table drives, shaper hydrostatic guides and spindle bushings.  The high flow rates of hydraulic oil help to reduce heat build up on these assemblies.  The viscosity of hydraulic oil can break down over time the same way it does in your vehicles engine and transmission.

A good practice is to change your hydraulic oil and filters annually or more if the machine is heavily used.  If possible, remove the access cover on the tank to clean the tank interior and intake screen for the pump.  Refill the tank with hydraulic oil recommended in your operator's manual.

It is a good idea to also change your cutting oil; while the tank is empty remove the sludge build-up in the tank.  This is especially important for shavers and grinders.  Sludge build-up can cause heat retention in the cutting oil, which can reduce part quality and size capabilities.  This service can be provided by MGTC Service Department as a part of our preventative maintenance program.
